College Access

Brooklyn College Community Partnership (BCCP) has been serving the community for over 20 years through the Psychology Department here at Brooklyn College.  Our goal is to continue building bridges from communities to Brooklyn College through flexible, relationship-based programming that truly engages young people, meeting them right where they are, supporting their academic and personal development, and making college a tangible, positive reality for them.

In 2018 – 2019, we began expanding our College Access Initiative to all New York City schools through our Brooklyn College Experience program, a single 3-hour visit consisting of a campus tour, art-based workshops on future readiness, a college talk, and lunch.  In the Spring of 2019, we conducted over 20 visits on our Campus and now we are an MTAC provider. Aside from one day visits, we also offer in school programs that serve more as a College Access Intensive over the course of several weeks.

We look at college as a multifaceted experience, so in our programs we discuss the practicality of it all (applications, financial aid, etc.), the social aspects (clubs/organizations, friendships, etc.) and the emotional aspects (leaving home, being on your own, etc.). While obviously, our emphasis is college, we also support students whose paths lead elsewhere. It is important to establish that college is a viable and accessible option, but not the only one. Many of the skills we tap into and sharpen in our programs can be applied to life in general. We are most concerned with equipping students with the tools necessary for navigating their futures.

We are just past the halfway mark of the 2019-2020 school year and we at Brooklyn College Community Partnership wanted to share some highlights and future opportunities with you all! So far this school year, we have provided dynamic College Access programs to almost 800 students! We facilitated our very first in school, six-session College Access Intensive at Ditmas Intermediate School 62 in December 2020. We are currently wrapping up one day college visits with the rest of their seventh grade class. Between January and February, we also hosted the seventh grade cohort from Robert F. Wagner 167 here at Brooklyn College. Moving forward, we have one day visits lined up with: PS 532, PS 38, PS 124, IS 364, IS 218, and PS 150.
